Integrating derivational analogy into a general problem solving architecture∗

چکیده
True expertise requires knowledge-intensive reasoning as a primary mental activity and a fallback to general problem solving in order to bridge gaps in the domain knowledge or to handle otherwise unexpected situations. This paper unites derivational analogy, a form of case-based reconstructive reasoning driven by rich episodic knowledge, with a general problem solving and planning architecture. The primary learning mechanism consists of extracting and organizing derivational traces of search-intensive problem solving episodes augmented with (and indexed by) explicit justification paths of success and failure conditions. This store of new episodic case knowledge drives the derivational analogy machinery in subsequent reasoning about problems that share substantial parts of the justification structure. The method is being implemented in the PRODIGY problem solving system and demonstrated in the domain of linear algebra. ∗This research was supported in part by ONR grants N00014-79-C-0661 and N0014-82-C-50767, DARPA contract number F33615-84-K-1520, and NASA contract NCC 2-463. Analysis and Empirical Studies of Derivational Analogyy
Derivational analogy is a technique for reusing problem solving experience to improve problem solving performance. This research addresses an issue common to all problem solvers that use derivational analogy: overcoming the mismatches between past experiences and new problems that impede reuse. First, this research describes the variety of mismatches that can arise and proposes a new approach t...

متن کاملArchitects and Engineers Differences: A comparison between problem solving performances of architects and engineers in the ideation phase of an analogy-based design
This study examines how analogy affects problem-solving in ideation phase of design among architects and engineers. For this purpose, a design problem was given to master and Ph.D. students of engineering and architecture. They were given two optional analogy sources to choose and be inspired by one. From the analysis of design sessions, using different coding groups and the application of the ...
متن کاملEmpirical Evidence for Derivational Analogy
Analogical problem solving is mostly described as transfer of a source solution to a target problem based on the structural correspondences (mapping) between source and target. Derivational analogy (Carbonell, 1986) proposes an alternative view: A target problem is solved by replaying a remembered problem solving episode. Thus, the experience with the source problem is used to guide the search ...
